Udumbara is a precious flower recorded in history books, blooming once every thousand years. Its bloom augurs well for humanity. In ancient India, the Udumbara flowers were in full bloom when Prince Siddharta was born. It was the happiness for all mankind, because this birth brought into this world an Enlightened Being that would help all sentient beings liberated from dark nights of ignorance and delusions. To commemorate the birth of the Awakened One to save the world, every year and everywhere in the world, all Buddhists joyfully celebrate this occasion.
A special event has happened this year for the first time in Vietnamese Buddhism. In May 2008, the United Nations Day of Vesak was officially hosted by Vietnam with representatives from close to 100 countries in the world. This unique and extraordinary event has been compared to a blooming Udumbara that signifies a good omen to come.
